Friends in football,
It's Jake Browning's world; we're all just living in it. Even Jameis.
Browning's best Burrow impression downed the Jags, and left us with just 21 in BIG Survivor, 11 in Survivor #2, and THREE in Loser Survivor.
The carnage also made our "Best Performing Squad" races VERY interesting in most pools. See the "results" section below for the Squad details.
In many ways, this Browning "WTF?" performance is an extremely fitting continuation of an NFL SZN that's increasingly defined by bizarro QB narratives. More on that in the "Commish Commentary" section.
Now if we could just get Billy B to put himself in at QB for the Patriots - the first team since the 1938 Chicago Cardinals (yup) to lose three straight games while allowing 10 points or fewer in all three.
RESULTS SUMMARY
The BIG Survivor (BFIG) results
- Survival record: 21 survive. 27 eliminated
- Worst loss: Jags (29%) to Bengals
- Best Squad: This just got VERY interesting. Our top 3 squads have ZERO survivors among them. 3 wins back, in 4th place, we have "Happy Birthday!" (lol) and "Randy Daytona (BallzOfFury)" (also lol) who each have one survivor
Weekly Pick'em (WeeWoo) results
- Weekly winner: Four brave souls went 12-1 - @Hart8000, @ZC03, @Kirstenlisa, and @lallipop24. The latter two picked that Bengals upset
- Best Squad: Commish wants to start a podcast where all he does is talk about the fierce WeeWoo Squad race between "Mom Said So", "Panda Warriors", and "Bearded Clams". The Bearded ones are currently on top by 3
- Overall leader: DRAMA. @Windtamer (136-56; 8-5 last week) is still on the throne but has to make room for two more sharing that throne - @otis (11-2) and @Armbruster81 (10-3)
Survivor #2 results
- Survival record: 11 survivors. 38 eliminated
- Best Squad: As predicted, "Stonemarkers" lead is dwindling, as they have no survivors. Second place "DeflateGateWasReal" (lol) is 3 wins back with 1 survivor, and third place "Capital Knockers Survivor" is 4 wins back also with 1 survivor
Survivor #3 results
- Survival record: 143 survivors. 479 eliminated
- Best Squad(s): Just like that, we have zero squads with 3+ survivors. Some familiar squad names have 2. Still a logjam at the top, and it'll likely come down to a squad with one person who goes very far
QB One-and-Done results
- Top passer: Jake F***ing Browning rewarded his five (5!) pickers with 347 yards
- Weekly average: 248 yards per pick (8 yards above the average QB performance)
- Best Squad: We have a contest! The huge "BLOODGATE" lead is no more. They're up just 109 yards on "Blindfolded Dart Throwers" and many more are now within striking distance
- Overall leader: @RM5589 (Lawrence, 321 yards) held onto the lead in what was a minefield picking week. I'd just like to note that, in 4th place, is the username @Cardinals_BY_A_MILLION. I love the SZN community
- Interval 3 leader: STANDING OVATION FOR OUR FIVE JAKE BROWNING BELIEVERS. They get rewarded with the lead one week into our third and final interval
Loser Survivor Brought to You by The OddsBreakers results
- Survival record: THREE survivors. 16 eliminated
- Worst win: Bengals (74%) beat Jags.
- Best Squad: Congrats to our first NFL SZN Squad winners! "Lake Meaders" is way out front AND has one of our three survivors in their ranks (@jonstiff). If Jon wins, y'all win the "Champ's Squad" prize. If he doesn't, you win "Best Performing Squad". Nice work
"All 32" One-and-Done results
- W/L record: 2,927-1,797
- Overall leader: We're down to just three leaders at 21-1 - @Skmorris2288, @mufc11, and @Soggiebear. 23 more lurk at 20-2
- Best Squad: 3-way tie at the top! "Ickey Woods All Stars", "Tommy's Teasers", and "Buter squad" all have 55 wins (out of a possible 66). 31 squads (hot damn!) are within 5 wins of the lead
COMMISH COMMENTARY
While "bad QB play" FEELS like a defining trait of the 2023 NFL SZN, our QB One-and-Done stats tell a different story.
Yes, we've had high profile injuries (Rodgers, Burrow, Cousins, Richardson). Yes, we've had high profile regressions (Allen). Yes, we've had "meh" top draft pick performance (Young).
And yet, when you compare our 2023 QB One-and-Done to the same pool in 2022... you get a story that reads a LOT like "not much has changed.
Take a look at these comparisons through 13 weeks this year vs. last year:
- Yards per pick: 263.3 (2023) vs. 264.4 (2022)
- Avg top QB performance: 399.7 (2023) vs. 404.5 (2022)
- Total 300+ QB performances: 82 (2023) vs. 78 (2022)
- Weeks with higher yards per pick: 6 (2023) vs. 7 (2022)
Where is the regression?! Commish doesn't see it.
Granted, we have some teams who are cataclysmically bad at the QB position (cough PATS cough), but we're never picking those outlier teams in the QB One-and-Done, anyway.
What's that? Oh, sorry. SHOUT-OUT TO OUR 6 BAILEY ZAPPE PICKERS LAST WEEK. NEVER CHANGE!!
With just 21 left in BIG Survivor, let's see what the Golden Spreadsheet shows.
Some of you have probably already noted that ALL 4 of our "leaders" - defined as BFIG picklines with the fewest combined wins - went down in Week 13.
As Commish always says - the name of the game is "survive", not "win pretty" or "make sure you have X team available".
With that said, here are the teams used by the highest % of our BIG survivors:
Cowboys, Dolphins, Chiefs, Niners, Jags: 100% used (and a stroke of good luck given none of our 21 could even have picked the Jags or Chiefs last week)
- Lions: 95% (ONE has them available)
- Seahawks, Commanders: 91% (2)
- Bills, Chargers, Bucs, Titans: 86% (3)
- Steelers: 81% (4)
- Rams: 76% (5)
- Ravens, Eagles: 62% (8)
- Texans: 38% (13)
- Packers: 0% (21)
Could the C.J. Stroud Texans and Jordan Love Packers be the keys to hoisting the 2023 BFIG Title Belt?!
Talk about QB narratives...
Our "All 32" One-and-Done is about to get wild. Here's why...
There are currently 12 teams with a winning record.
Here's how many of those 12 teams our All 32 OAD leaders have picked:
- @Skmorris2288 (21-1): 12/12
- @mufc11 (21-1): 10/12
- @Soggiebear (21-1): 11/12
- Our 23 people at 20-2 average 10.8/12
There are still TEN picks left. And remember, the whole point of the format is you have to pick every NFL team exactly once.
You really think these people are gonna go 8-2 or even 7-3 picking 8, 9, or 10 teams that are currently at .500 or worse?
Commish loves rhetorical questions.
I can't wait to see how this one ends. It's been your favorite new pool format, and GM and Commish feel the same way.
Yours in football,
The Commish
