Gano Gunslingers,
The Panthers were a huge BFIG pick last week, meaning there's now a 36 percent chance our champ will have survived on a buzzer-beating 63-yard field goal.
Our 2010 champ, @kensofer, won three consecutive overtime games on a field goal. So, crazier things have happened. Also, for you Giants fans out there, courtesy of @ktenney12...
In the entire history of professional football, there's been just six game-winning field goals from 60+ yards. The Giants have fallen victim to this twice in the past two years.
ELIFACE!!! (breath) !!!!!!!!!!!
THE STREAK IS OVER: COMMISH INTERVIEWS @FOOTBALLNOVICE
As of last week, @footballnovice had made 29 BFIG picks. She won all 29 of them.
Her streak left us awestruck and stupified. Her username made us both envious and furious. Then she picked the same team as Commish (Tennessee), and, well... here we are.
Commish: You won 29 straight BFIG games. Did you think you'd ever lose?
@footballnovice: I thought I'd lose EVERY week. Honestly!
C: I've won 27 BFIG games... in 10 years. I'm not sure this is a question.
FN: Just 27, COMMISH? (The teacher in me says, "You can always aspire to do better!")
C: What else are you as good at as you are picking BFIG winners?
FN: I'm not good at cooking. I don't think I want to divulge anything else.
C: Proper mad scientist answer. I mean, you picked a road underdog in a playoff game with $50,000 on the line (Atlanta). What in the world was going through your mind?
FN: Welllll... I figured I was already going to win $7,500, so, what the heck? Go for broke. No pain, no gain!
C: Last week, did you know Commish had also picked Buffalo's opponent?
FN: Once I saw that, I was devastated. I knew I was doomed.
C: Given you're perhaps the best NFL survivor player to ever walk the planet, what's the joke with your username?
FN: Truly, it was a hastily chosen username, but honest estimation of my abilities. I've cheered two Big Ten college teams in my life. I knew what the quarterback and running back did. That's the truth.
C: Sure it is. Whatever you say. Some believe you aren't actually a person - that you're a collective. Specifically, the 1985 Chicago Bears (the Super Bowl Shuffle team) pooling together its knowledge, Moxie, willpower, and chummy relationship with the survivor gods. What say you?
FN: I am ONE PERSON, and made my selections all on my own. HOWEVER, toward the end of last season, my sister's husband and my special guy were attempting to give me some pointers... My sister stopped them and said, "Hey, trust your gut. This has been all you." So I didn't listen to the guys. And here I am :)
C: Thousands on The SZN look to you for guidance and wisdom through dark times. Any parting words for us?
FN: Thanks for the thrill of a lifetime. Best part? Seeing people's facial expressions when I said that I - a woman in her 60s - had won $50,000 in a football pool. Don't take yourself so seriously, bub. Mic drop.
WEEK 6 HEALTH CHECK: SOMEHOW, WE DID JUST FINE
- Damage done: In BFIG, we went from 630 to 521 after 6 picked teams lost. In Second Chance, we went from 6,317 to 4,836 after 15 picked teams lost.
- Could it have been worse? So much worse. Gano's 63-yarder saved 30 percent of BFIG from being ELIFACE'd, and another 10 percent survived on Cincinnati's comeback. Could have been another week of mass carnage.
- Closest call: Panthers over Giants. How much would you pay to hear the voice inside OBJ's head as Gano's 63-yarder sailed through the uprights with several yards to spare?
- Easiest win: Patriots over Colts. Sometimes the easy pick is the easy pick.
- Team SZN record: 1-1. Hi, I'm Commish, and I'm bad at survivor pools. The GM survived on the Rams and is on to Second Chance Week 6.
