Free throws are such a strange subject in the NBA. It's an uncontested shot that middle schoolers can make semi-consistently. But last season only four players hit 90% of their free throws. And if you get to take too many FTs, you're foul-baiting (probably) and ruining the game (debatable). So how do we feel if our best performing OAD pick took an insane numbers of FTs (22)? And he hit them at an incredible clip (20 made, 91%)? And if that helped him reach a SZN-high 46 points? In this instance, maybe we'll let it slide...

ONE-AND-DONE RECAP
Weekly Standings | Player Performance | Overall Standings
First, backup picks
- 17 of our pickable players didn't play, and 8 of those got at least one pick
- In total, 82 picks were on those 8 DNPs
- 68 of those pickers had a backup that DID play, leaving 14 with a double DNP selection that received zero points this week
- Commish was one of those 14, poor guy
- A piece of advice I'll keep repeating: Check in on the injury report on Thurs/Fri to maximize your DNP-avoidance
Results
- 9 of our top 10 picks scored 30+ points
- We averaged 23.7 points per pick this week, down from 27.4 last week
- Our top pick, J. Morant, torpedoed us with one of the worst performances of the week putting up a measley 12 points
- He only played 25 minutes and MEM was running away with it (peaked at a 44 point lead), so they sat him to protect him
- D. DeRozan was the king this week, pouring in 46 points for 7 pickers
- He took an ASTOUNDING 22 free throws and made 20 of them, crazy impressive. CHI only took 25 total FTs...
- Rounding out our top five scorers this week were D. Fox (37), J. Tatum (36), L. Doncic (35), and T. Young (34)
- We actually had players post 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, and 37 points this week, an interesting little run there
- Big performers we DIDN'T pick: F. Wagner (31) and J. Holiday (29)
- Underperformers we DID pick: D. Russell (9 points, picked by 1), E. Mobley (11, 1), J. Morant (12, 88) [it hurts so bad]
- Some big shot callers: DeRozan (46 points, picked by 7), P. George (32, 2)
Team SZN Performance
- Yours truly raked in 29 this week. Merf followed with 20, StatCzar with 17, and Commish pulled up the tail end with a goose egg.
- Overall, I've got our best placement at 67th
- Reminder: we play along for fun and pride, we can't win anything
Remember that we've got prizes for both Overall AND shorter Intervals during the season. Right now, Overall is the same as our first Interval. After another week or two, I'll include updates on the Standings here as well so we can see how the prize chase is going.
SURVIVOR RECAP
Weekly Standings | Game Outcomes
- We entered the week with 153 players and exited with 125, an 81.6% survival rate
- This was MUCH better than Week 1 where only 34.4% of us made it out
- Did games go as expected? Did we get more clever?
- I think we can claim a little column A, a little column B
- 4 of our top 6 picks were against poor (or very injured) teams
- Our top 4 picks posted Ws, getting 100+ people through to the next week
- CLE (@ DET) and MEM (vs CHA) were both dominant against poor teams
- BOS (vs CHI) was a game I called out as a riskier matchup. It was close or CHI lead for most of the first half. BOS then held a solid lead in the second half, but let it get whittled down to less than 5 to close out the game
- NOP (vs GSW) sounds risky, but the injury report had 4 out of 5 GSW starters listed as out for the game, making this MUCH more tolerable
- PHX (vs POR) was our biggest loss, and with proper officiating might have cost us nothing.
- The Last Two Minute Report (L2M), where refs review the calls made in the final two minutes, state that J. Grants game winner should have been called a travel. That sends the game to OT and maybe changes the final result.
- This follows on the heels of T. Herro's game winner ALSO retroactively being called a travel. I appreciate the honesty, but it mostly just feels like salt in the wound to keep saying "we totally blew this buzzer beating call, sorry, can't do anything about it" *shrugs*
Team SZN Performance
- Commish and I survived on DEN and NOP respectively
- StatCzar and Merf both went down with DAL last week, I forgot to share
- Reminder: we play along for fun and pride, we can't win anything
Yours in hoops,
The GM
