Another year will come and go without a chance to hoist the BFIG Title Belt. There will be no slow-motion, finger-raised jog off the Orange Bowl field, nor a celebratory smooch from Papa John.

Damn you, Staffykins. (Yes, I have a pet name for Matthew Stafford. Get over it.)

Bad beats happen, as a few hundred of us on the Lions last week can attest to. And, as an original BFIG-er — a member of The OG 46, if you will — I've been there, done that.

But some of you are new to the game and might not know what to expect, especially when it comes to losing so soon. So I present to you the four stages of BFIG early-season elimination grief.

PHASE 1: ANGER

First and goal from the 1, and YOU DID THIS, LIONS?!

Andre Johnson?! You're not supposed to be able TO STILL DO THIS.

ANOTHER TERRIBLE PICK, STAFFYKINS?!

PHASE 2: PHILOSOPHICAL CRISIS

ANOTHER terrible pick, Staffykins?!

He’s so overrated. Always comes up small. Never won anything. I mean, who’s had the better career: Stafford or Mark Sanchez? At least Sanchez has actually won four playoff games. Stafford’s never won anything. Consistently slightly above-average, and nothing to show for it.

PHASE 3: BACK TO REALITY

Sanchez all the way? On what planet? Come on, Grant, you’re better than that. Take off your green-and-white- and cardinal-and-gold-colored glasses.

At least there’s still the Second Chance Pool...

PHASE 4: ACCEPTANCE

The Second Chance Pool! I love the Second Chance Pool! I won’t be denied again!

(Or at least I won’t make the mistake of picking Staffykins and the Lions.)
