UCL Knockout Kickoff

Friends in fútbol,

The Champions League Round of 16 starts on Valentine's Day (2/14). Insert "soccer is for lovers" joke here.

You get THREE competitions during the Knockout Stage. Picks are now open for two of them. Read this email to know how they all work.

At the end of the email, Commish recaps what went down in our Group Stage pick'em, but first, let's quickly review what we're doing here.

 

PICK'EM - ZLATAN PICK'EM

How it works: Pick the winner of every game. And yes, you can pick draws! Best record over the Knockout Stage wins.

Prizes: $2,400 (25 places)

The schedule: We'll pick before each week in which there are games. The Round of 16 is played over four different weeks (each with 4 games), so we'll pick 4 times in this round. The Quarters and Semis have 2 picking weeks each. The Final is a single game.

 

BRACKET - COUPE DES CLUBS BRACKET

How it works: For the Round of 16, simply pick the 8 teams you believe will advance. Then, after the Quarterfinal draw, you'll fill out a classic 8-team bracket (7 total picks). Points per correct pick, per round: 3, 5, 8, 13. Most points wins.

Prizes: $2,400 (25 places)

The schedule: Round of 16 picks due by Feb. 14 kickoff. Final 8 Bracket picks due before the Quarters (Apr. 11).

 

PROPS - UCL FINAL PROPSAPALOOZE

How it works: The Super Bowl made props (questions with multiple choice answers) famous. The UCL Final is the Super Bowl of soccer. 20 fun questions about the big game. Most correct answers wins.

Prizes: $2,400 (25 places)

The schedule: Everything takes place Jun. 10 during the UCL Final. Picks will open at least 1 week beforehand.

 

 

GROUP STAGE PICK'EM RECAP

There were 162 of us Champions League SZN pioneers. The OG Group Stage pickers in our first-ever foray into the beautiful game.
6 Matchdays. 96 picks. Let's recap what went down:

  • Group Stage champ: @baebae408 (61-35). The best we could muster was a 63.5% correct pick rate, proving that soccer pick'ems are... hard. (@Merf finished 62-34 but Team SZN can't win money!)
  • Most common record: 49-47 (15 people). Once again, soccer pick'ems are hard. Our champ went 5-11 in Matchday 4 and STILL won the Group Stage. See Group Stage standings >>
  • Individual Matchday winners (click each link to see that Matchday's leaderboard):
  • Summary stats: We averaged 8.55 correct picks per week. We picked draws 13% of the time, and hit on 20.4% of those picks (oof). Our top pick, however, did win in all six weeks.

 

As with all SZNs, payouts get processed in the week following conclusion of that SZN. Congrats to everyone who took home a piece of our first-ever Group Stage Pick'em!

 

T-minus 10 days. Dust off those cleats. Rub the lucky Rooney. Tell some friends. Let's do this thing.
