NOW, sometimes the best way to slay the King is to have the King inexpicably gaffe.
Scottie Scheffler had a 5-foot putt to win his semifinal match with Sam Burns. He missed it. Burns won on the next hole, then absolutely dominated the Final to claim the WGC Match Play title.
It was a massively leveraged win ($3.5M) for our 19 Burns pickers, as he was just our 20th most picked golfer.
The only top 14 (by World Rank) golfer picked less was Matty FitzTestTubeGolfer... because he hasn't looked like a Test Tube Golfer of late.
But when Burns gets hot, he gets HOT. Last year, he was our top "I mean, he'll probably either miss the cut or win the whole damn thing" guy. And this year... yeah, seems like not much has changed.
Are you gonna pick Burns in survivor and feel good about it? Almost certainly not. But is he an amazing value pick at #20 in ANY event? Absolutely.
The YEYPO Overall lead is $13.38M (@GatorBuffs, who is now officially our Interval 1 champ). And if you're way behind, just think of it this way: You can bag $13M+ over the course of 10 weeks.
And if you do (or really anything close to that), you're RIGHT back in the thick of it heading into the home stretch.
WEEK 10 RECAP
YEYPO
Golfer Performance | Weekly Performance | Overall Standings | Golden Spreadsheet
Despite a chalky top 4 (Rory, Scheff, Burns, Cam Young), it was our second worst showing, behind only Pebble Beach Pro-Am in Week 3. We averaged just 1.98% of the purse in earnings per pick.
Chalk beats Match Play track record. Kevin Kisner, the Match Play King, didn't escape his group. And while other Match Play wizards did escape their group, Billy Horschel and Matt Kuchar both lost in the Round of 16, and Jason Day lost in the quarters.
Skin?
Two skin oppos (Mackenzie Hughes and Kurt Kitayama) made the quarters, but both lost there. Kitayama shot 5-under, but ran into the Cam Young buzzsaw.
Biggest Shank
Tyrell Hatton was by far our top pick (290 picks), and totally flamed out. He lost all three matches to three relative no-names, and didn't even see the 18th hole in any match.
Standings
@GatorBuffs maintained their lead despite picking Hatton, which reflects how tough it was for most of us this week. We did get a new entrant in the top 5, with @ryandarcy10 picking Cam Young and bagging $2.2M for the runner-up finish.
Big John
It was a bye week thanks to no cuts in match play. We're at 218 players remaining. Picking resumes this week.
Team SZN Performance
None of us escaped our group. Commish is hanging on to top 100 status in 94th place.
Reminder: Team SZN plays along for fun and bragging rights but can't win any money.
Yours in metal stick swinging,
The Commish
